Ode to OMNY
Tweed Courthouse Steps | 52 Chambers Street, Manhattan

🪦 RIP Student OMNY 🪦

Student OMNY cards are dying — and half a million NYC students are about to feel the consequences.

Student OMNY cards deactivate after August 31, leaving hundreds of thousands of students without the free transit they’ve relied on all year long. In other words, the half million students who rely on Student OMNY have no way to get to the first day of school without paying out of pocket — or fare evading...so we’re holding a funeral.

Join Transportation Alternatives Youth Activist Committee and other NYC students on the Tweed Courthouse Steps at 1 PM on Wednesday, September 9 to mourn the loss of our Student OMNY cards. We’ll deliver eulogies remembering all the places we were able to go, people we were able to see, and opportunities we were able to access thanks to free student transit.

🖤 Wear black and come dressed for the occasion.

Want to help us make props for the funeral? Join our art-ivation at the Transportation Alternatives office at 111 John Street, Suite #260 on Friday, September 4 from 4–6 PM.

Student transit shouldn’t have an expiration date. Come mourn Student OMNY — and make some noise for the students who need it back.

What do we want?

Cubic Transportation Systems (OMNY Vendor)  must
  • Fix the hardware and software issues with OMNY validators and machines.
  • Improve transparency about who can access data from riders.
  • Provide restitution to the MTA for years of delays and contract violations.
Attorney General Letitia James  must
  • Investigate and sue Cubic for defects with
OMNY that have caused delays, overcharges, and erroneous fines.
  • Investigate the OMNY contract to find whether any changes caused suffering.
  • Investigate Cubic's connection to Palantir (a contractor for ICE) and assess security risks.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli  must
  • Audit the MTA to determine the extent to which riders should be reimbursed for OMNY breakdowns, overcharges, and service disruptions.
  • Assemble a task force of affected riders to develop a stable path forward for OMNY.
New York State Assembly and Senate  must
  • Demand that the MTA reform its transfer policy to allow for more flexible transferring system-wide, especially overnight and during system disruptions.
  • Demand that the MTA reinstate the coin payment option onboard buses.
  • Create a statewide Fare Fares program.
MTA  must
  • Stop its aggressive (and sometimes predatory) fare enforcement and inspection on buses.
  • Inform riders of the 18-minute restriction between OMNY taps.
  • Properly update the fare tariff to reflect the redesigned bus networks.
Governor Kathy Hochul  must
  • Suspend the impending fare increase.
  • Demand unlimited options for OMNY in addition to fare capping.
  • Demand that the MTA revise its transfer policy to accommodate the redesigned bus networks.
MTA Inspector General Daniel Cort  must
  • Investigate whether the majority of OMNY breakdowns and summonses occurred in non-white and/or socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.
  • Assess whether there are enough technicians to fix OMNY defects in these areas.
Riders (YOU)  must
  • Speak out about your experiences with OMNY, especially if you've been affected!
  • Sign our petition! (passengersunited.org/petitions)
  • Join our on-the-ground efforts and mobilize (the numbers make all the difference)!
