Focus Vice President of Long Island Rail Road / Nassau Inter-County Express Advocacy
Volunteer Executive Position (Non-Paid) One Year or More
Job Description:
This position is for an exceptional commuter who can recruit, lead, motivate, and organize the activities and agenda of Passengers United. This job requires a lot of oversight and is demanding; therefore the individual must have good communication skills and be highly motivated.
Responsibilities: The Vice President will be responsible for speaking out and advocating for LIRR riders throughout the Nassau and Suffolk county region. Must be able to attend monthly MTA Committee or Board meetings which will be virtual or in person. Must be able to recruit members of the community who ride trains or NICE buses in Long Island for the 2022 bus redesign project. Overall recruitment will be conducted by social media, posters in community centers and individual referrals by word of mouth. In addition there will be a executive meeting once a month where all Passengers United members will be required to attend.
The Vice President must be able to communicate with the Board of Directors and executive director on progress with ongoing issues on a weekly basis by emails or phone calls. Help will be provided by the entire team using our in house designed web applications, forms and posters.
Furthermore, the Vice President is charged with following and implementing policies in accordance with our Mission Statement, which relates to our programs and the organization’s principles. The Vice President must be able to serve as a liaison by working with the executive director to monitor membership, process volunteer forms and conduct orientation. The Vice President will also be responsible for organizing special events for ongoing projects like the Queens Bus redesign.
Time Commitment: One year + position. Meetings will take place once per month. E-mails and phone calls required five times per week or more depending on the volume of the organization/events that are taking place.
Qualifications: Must have High School diploma and have accumulated at least 60 college credits, with proficiency in basic office software (e.g. word processing, presentations, etc.). Must have strong entrepreneurial skills, be ambitious and independent, willingness to learn new things and have taken an intro to business class and have a financial understanding of the industry. You will get free extensive training, which will be provided in non-profit management and also within state and federal guidelines.

- Working with Nassau Inter County Express, MTA New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Metro North Rail Road, Port Authority Trans-Hudson, AirTrain JFK, AirTrain Newark, New Jersey Transit, Amtrak and all airlines to make sure ADA issues and complaints are being addressed in a timely matter for passengers with ADA issues.
- For recruiting 25 new members on the newly formed Passengers United ADA Task Force who have disabilities which will meet once a month for 2 hours starting in late October 2022 to discuss on going issues, new business and organize on how to process or move forward with addressing ADA issues.
- Creating the annual Passengers United Edith Prentiss Leadership ADA Award ceremony in mid-July 2023 to honor outstanding leaders which will be virtual or in person. In addition, they must be able to recruit members of the community who use transportation in the Tri-State Area. Overall recruitment will be conducted by social media, posters in community centers and individual referrals by non profit ADA advocacy groups.

Board members are also responsible for keeping the board functioning in accordance with the Mission Statement, which relates to our programs and the organization’s principles. Board members must be able to serve as a liaison by working with the treasurer and secretary to monitor financial activities, which involve acquisitions, purchasing, and negotiating within the organization, as well as tracking cash inflows and outflows, while presenting budget reports on a monthly basis to the board. Board members will also be responsible for creating special committees for ongoing projects.
Time Commitment: 2 years + position. Meetings will take place once per month. Emails and phone calls are required twice per week or more, depending on the volume of the organization/events that are taking place.

Riders' Review Media Team
We are looking for 5 student volunteers seeking a career in journalism (or similar field). Candidates would not only become part of a winning team and help make a difference for everyday commuters but also gain valuable skills in digital media and journalism through stimulating experience.
Job Description: Candidates would write and report news stories, including breaking news events, around transportation in the New York Metropolitan Area, which is where we cover. Candidates would create video segments by conducting video interviews, recording and editing video, and attending press conferences. Candidates would also conduct research in areas such as the transportation industry, urban planning/ development, equity in transportation, and legislation around transportation, safety, equity, and sustainability.
Minimum Requirements:

- Must have fundamental video editing and/or graphic design skills, including the ability to incorporate the Brand Standards into your work. We will train you how to utilize such skills for our purposes.
- Must attend the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) committee and board meetings each month in person. Exact dates are posted on their website.
- Using and handling professional video equipment, including cameras, tripods, microphones, lighting, etc.
- Adobe Premiere Pro and/or Final Cut Pro X (editing)
- Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator (graphic design)
